What it needs from you
One honest conversation, and then a decision when there is something to decide.
One conversation, and it needs to be the honest version#
One conversation about how the business actually runs. The real version — including the parts held together with a spreadsheet and somebody remembering.
The tidy version is the one that produces a system nobody uses. The messy version is the useful one, and nothing in it is going to surprise me.
Then, decisions when there are decisions#
After that you are needed at the points where somebody has to choose something, and not in between.
There is no weekly call to sit through and no report to read. If there is nothing to decide, you will not hear from me, and that is intended rather than neglectful.
What it does not need#
It does not need a brief in any particular format. It does not need you to know what anything is called. It does not need you to learn or manage anything, then or later.
